GEORGE LUCAS IN LOVE: The Inspiration for STAR WARS (sort of)

With Valentine’s Day approaching I needed to share with you a love story, so here it is:  George Lucas in Love. This is probably my favorite short film of all time. From 1999, this short is a parody of Shakespeare in Love.

But instead of William Shakespeare suffering writers block until he falls in love, it imagines a young Lucas at USC struggling to finish his script “Space Wheat” until he meets and falls for his muse.

Directed and co-written by Joe Nussbaum, George Lucas In Love re-imagines how Lucas came up with the Star Wars trilogy based on the things he saw around him at USC.

If you’ve ever wondered how Lucas imagined the Force, Ben Kenobi, Darth Vader, Han and Chewie, R2-D2 and C-3P0, Yoda, Princess Leia and Jabba the Hutt, then this short is for you.

According to an interview with Joe Nussbaum, George Lucas enjoyed his short film.

“He really responded well to the film. He thought it was great. He thought it was funny. And I think he really thought of it as a homage to him, and not of any kind of a slight.”

I hope you enjoy George Lucas in Love too.  Please let me know what you think.
